This novel unfolds a dramatic period in English history when women were granted rights to make their own decisions nevertheless they were deprived of them largely due to social pressure and conservative prejudices. Kitty, a mid-twenty years old woman, is urged by her family to marry a young doctor for whom she has no affection whatsoever and when she starts an affair with another man the consequences become irrevocable and unexpected. In the end Kitty realizes the most important thing – girls must not be brought up as poor-educated housewives but as open minded, independent and self-reliant individuals.
