Johanna Spyri’s Heidi is the most renowned work of Swiss children's literature. The novel’s heroine, Heidi, is an orphan living with her grandfather and lively goats in a picturesque village in the Swiss Alps, where life feels like a daily celebration, and golden, fire-roasted cheese and fresh goat milk are a royal feast. However, Heidi must leave her beloved village to begin a new life in Frankfurt. Today, Dörfli, depicted in the novel, is often referred to as "Heididorf" — Heidi’s village. In this mountain hamlet, little has changed; it remains nearly identical to the distant past when Johanna Spyri penned this charming tale.
