Sophocles’ Theban Tragedies
This volume presents three of the most renowned tragedies by the great Greek playwright Sophocles (c. 496–406 BCE): Oedipus Rex (the play that gave rise to the term "Oedipus complex"), Oedipus at Colonus (Sophocles’ final work), and Antigone. All three are offered in a fresh translation with meticulous annotations, while Oedipus at Colonus is being published in Armenian for the first time.
The introduction not only explores these tragedies in depth but also provides an overview of Sophocles’ life, the unique characteristics of ancient Greek theater, and the structural elements of Greek tragedy.
